Organic Renovation of Building From Factory to Incubator
The Esquel Innovation & Incubation Village in Xinjiang, China, is a sustainable revitalization project that aims to integrate with the local context. The design philosophy focuses on blending the region’s culture, history, and lifestyle into the incubator’s framework. Key design principles include locality, organic growth, and a people-oriented approach.
Our design philosophy revolves around sustainability and a seamless integration into the local context. We aim to blend the culture of Xinjiang, the history of the factory, and the local lifestyle into the main design framework. Our goal is to create a design approach that appreciates the historical wisdom and cultural symbols of the surrounding area, enhancing the cultural connection between visitors, users, and the new incubator. This design philosophy serves as a foundation, allowing us to navigate the cosmopolitan setting of Urumqi while projecting towards the future.
Remodelling Factory into Incubator
The factory undergoes renovation to create a spacious and inspiring environment for incubating agriculture and textile related startups. A project inscribed in a factory spanning 30,000sqm shall create an inspiring space that preserves the sense of expansiveness, if not amplifies it.
Rammed Earth Facade
The whole exterior wall of the factory was repaired and remodeled to project a new image of the incubator. By employing the expression of rammed earth, the design establishes a visual link to tradition, while the strategic placement of windows and doors suggests a contemporary touch and modification. The facade shall be perceived as both modest and self-confident.
Entrance Gate
To embody the notion of limitless success, the original entrance gate portal was dismantled. It is replaced with a rammed earth expression, accompanied by a sleek security gate that emerges from the ground, providing minimal obstruction. This transformation signifies a departure from conventional boundaries and represents the open and inclusive mindset necessary for achieving boundless achievements at the new incubator.
