Scaffold

Object, Furniture

Scaffold is a modular bamboo furniture system that breathes new life into Hong Kong’s disappearing bamboo scaffolding craft. Drawing from the city’s rich tradition of knot-tying ingenuity, it reinterprets the tactile, string-based logic of scaffolding through steel cable joints inspired by nylon ties. With a simple winding motion, the cable tightens and locks, reflecting the intuitive, adaptive spirit of traditional scaffolders while being engineered for everyday domestic use. Each piece is made from bamboo reclaimed from construction sites, upcycled to honour its history and extend its story. The modular design enables flat-pack shipping and easy assembly, reducing carbon footprint and democratizing construction. As bamboo scaffolding gives way to steel, Scaffold highlights what is lost—not just a building method, but a symbol of Hong Kong’s identity: its improvisational genius, resilience under constraint, and fluid balance between order and chaos.
