State Theatre Parabolic Exoskeleton Trusses
Event by K11 Culture for Tomorrow, Exhibition design by aona architects, Neon Light Installation by Studio RYTE, Fabrication by Po Wah Neon Light Co.
The Neon Light Installation is designed for the exhibition — "Discover the State Theatre in All of Us", it is an immersive event created to recreate the enigmatic sights, sounds and scenes of the State Theatre of the 1950s and 1960s.
Approach
Through our careful deconstruction of the structural arches, we create a unified lighting installation that celebrates both the structure and the former glory of the Hong Kong film industry.
We hope to recreate the essence of Chungking Express (1994) directed by Wong Kar Wai, by capturing the colors, lighting and blurring effects of the movie into the neon lights in the installation.
We use simple reflections and blurry light refraction to create a fading arch array. The light spills out to the surrounding spaces and corridors around the periphery of the installation. By blending in the two contrasting arrays of colors where warm tones symbolize coziness and cold tones separation, we pay tribute to cinematographer Christopher Doyle.
