PolyU InnoHub
InnoHub is a cross-faculty strategic initiative in PolyU, promoting communal innovations and entrepreneurship in partnerships with students, faculties, industries, and investors. A physical space dedicated for Innohub was first opened in 2017 in the Innovation Tower designed by Zaha Hadid. The second phase was completed in 2019, consisting of a collection of multi-purpose spaces designed for collaboration, pop-up events and exhibition display.
Audaciously sculpted, Innovation Tower has a dynamic expression of lines and a consistent use of materials and colors throughout the building. In view of the dominating aesthetics, the approach of the project was to focus on stationary furniture pieces that enhance the functions of the spaces, as well as moveable furniture pieces that allow flexible uses.
The originally open spaces are redefined with several carefully positioned sculptural masses that serve as display counters and working tables. Their forms resonate with the existing ceiling light and preserve the fluidity of the space. With a selection of glowing colors derived from the Innohub's brand identity, the vibe and brand of the space are subtly enhanced.
Configurable sofa sets, coffee tables and partitions are designed for Innohub's use. Light-weight stackable chairs and foldable tables are provided for a customizable use of space. Separate zones for concentration and for collaboration are purposefully fit into the original architectural layout. Users may flow through different sections of the space for different degree of privacy and quietness. Custom-made acoustic panels and whiteboards, both movable and stationary one, are propagated around the area for their use.
With minimal alteration to the existing space, the scheme gives a new definition to the space, striking a balance between providing functions to the users as well as preserving the continuity of the whole building.
